External Landforms

- By Bhargo

Natural features of our surrounding or landforms around a house have profound impact on the well being of its residents. Many formulae of the San He school of Feng Shui are based on the location and directions of such features with respect to the house.

The 2 most important external formations are mountains & water bodies:

  1. Mountains:
They are considered to be perfectly Yin, as they always remain still and motionless. Mountains can make or break the fortune of a person. Generally it is considered that a mountain at the back of the house gives support to the structure. Given below is the ideal situation where the four mountains of various sizes are on all sides to give beneficial Qi to the structure.

  • Black Tortoise: A tall mountain in the back is called "Black Tortoise". This is essential to give support to the house.

  • Red Phoenix: The raised ground in front of the house is termed as "Red Phoenix". This avoids the Qi from running away from your house. The red phoenix should not be too high as it will restrict growth of the residents.

  • White Tiger: "White Tiger" is to the right of the house. It should not be very tall but taller than the house. It is recommended that the White Tiger is long and curved inward to bring wealth in the house.

  • Green Dragon: "Green Dragon" is to the left of the house. It should be preferably turned inward to bring in good Qi. A Green Dragon should always be taller than the White Tiger to have a balance in the house.

Such perfect sites having all these formations are very rare to find.

In modern cities, skyscrapers act as mountains!!! But they are generally hollow and have people living inside it. Hence they cannot be considered as completely Yin.

  1. Water bodies:
Water is considered to be very Yang as it is always very active. Generally a water body in the front of the house is considered to be good. It is believed that good Qi is dispersed by wind and collects on the edges of water. A property that is embraced by water is considered good. The same is explained by the below diagram. The property on the inside of the water flow curve gets good Qi and the one on the outside gets bad Qi.

In modern cities, roads act as rivers!!! But only those roads, which have regular traffic, are considered as watercourses.
