Q.

What is Feng Shui?
Feng Shui is the metaphysical study of the effect that a person's environment has on his well-being. The factors that are considered are magnetic fields, earth gravity, surrounding landforms, time & constellations. For 4 millennia, Chinese sages have discovered the secret of Feng Shui. Precise formulae have been made with an aim to help people achieve life fulfillment. These formulae have been a close guarded secret till recently. Thanks to structured teaching by a few masters, the non-Chinese world has been able to benefit from this art.

Q. Is Feng Shui spiritual?
No doubt Feng Shui is steeped in Taoist teaching… but it is a proper study of the effect of environment on a person. You do not have to believe in Feng Shui for it to work. Please note chanting of mantra and keeping symbols is not a part of the Feng Shui. This method is employed by those who do not have true knowledge of Feng Shui.

Q. Do I have to buy a lot of cures like statues and mirrors to apply Feng Shui to my house?
It is very important to make the distinction between Chinese culture and Feng Shui. Statues and turtles are part of Chinese Mythology. Just the way an Indian lady draws a rangoli for good luck, Chinese lady would keep a turtle statue. These are part of faith and not Feng Shui. Today, anything that is Chinese is sold in the market as a Feng Shui cure!!! Feng Shui has nothing to do with statutes, trinkets and charms. It is the study of effect of earth's magnetic forces, surrounding landforms and time. The only cures that are available in Feng Shui are the clever manipulation of directions and application of the 5-element theory.

Q.

Are there different types in Feng Shui?
Feng Shui is not a book written by one person. It is collective thought gathered over the last 4 millennia. Hence different schools have emerged. Feng Shui can broadly be segregated into 2 schools of thoughts:

  • San He: This concentrates on the effect on a house and its residents of the surrounding landforms like mountains, rivers, roads, buildings etc. this is also considered to be the oldest discipline within.
  • San Yuan: In this method you consider the time element. Depending on the date of construction of the house and its facing, an energy blueprint of the house is made.

Q.

My friend has read a few books on Feng Shui. Should I take his advice?
Can a person become a neurosurgeon by reading a few books? Please note that half knowledge is dangerous. As Feng Shui is not a subject that one can understand from books, most books tend to give quick fix solutions, which do not work. This disillusions budding Feng Shui enthusiasts and they think that Feng Shui is just mumbo-jumbo.

Q.

How can I locate my money square?
In classical Feng Shui there is nothing like a "money square" in your house. With an aim to simplify Feng Shui, some people came up with a simplified version called "8 Aspirations of Life". In this method, the house is divided into 8 part and a life aspiration is assigned to each one e.g career, wealth, love etc. This "one pill for all problems" does not work. Cate Bramble, a reputed Feng Shui expert calls this version "McFengShui" because of its quick-fix mass-market approach. In traditional Feng Shui, a practitioner will chart the energy blue print of your house and use the five-element theory to correct the problems.

Q.

When should I consult a Feng Shui expert?
You should consult a Feng Shui expert in the following case:

  • Relationship problems
  • Unexpected fall in income
  • Renovation of house
  • Selecting/ building a new house
  • Health problems
  • Hindrances in Career

Q.

What do you mean by a Feng Shui audit?
A Feng Shui audit is a detailed survey of the house and its surroundings and the effect it has on its residents. An audit can take anywhere between 1-3 hours depending on the size and complexity of the situation. The Feng Shui expert should take into consideration the following aspects for the audit:

  • Birth dates of all the residents
  • Date of construction of the building
  • To scale layout of the house
  • Surrounding landform like mountains, water bodies, buildings, roads, trees etc.

Q.

Feng Shui was written in olden days… how can it be applicable in modern times?
Feng Shui has evolved over last 4000 years and continues to evolve further. The formulae are based on the sound understanding of I-Ching, the great book of changes. The knowledge base is time tested and hence applicable in the modern era.

Q.

What if the existing house does not suit me?
Feng Shui has a lot of formulae where you can manipulate the house to give you the best results. A Feng Shui practitioner will use the 5-element theory to enhance the good areas and suppress the bad areas. Also the location and direction of your main door, bed and stove can be changed to give better results. The aim is to optimize the use of your house.

Q.

I live in a rented apartment… why should I waste my money on a Feng Shui expert?
Rented or owned… a house has profound impact on your well-being. If you want a full life you will have to apply Feng Shui to your rented house also.

Q. What do you mean by "Annual Assessment" of Feng Shui?
The energy levels in the house are changing continuously. There are annual, monthly daily changes happening. The Feng Shui expert should be able to help you use these changes to the fullest. You should avoid the inauspicious areas and tap the auspicious areas.
